InnovationDesignLab employs “smart media” in the classroom

Impact Smart media empowers instructors and students to think in new forms, work in new venues, and communicate with diverse audiences.

DesignLab focuses on the conceptual and aesthetic dimensions of emerging scholarly genres we call “smart media.” Smart media empowers instructors and students to think in new forms, work in new venues, and communicate with diverse audiences, including specialists and non-specialists, family and friends, alumni and potential donors.

DesignLab is located in College Library and officially opens Fall 2012, but already we have trained several TA consultants, drawn from 8 programs across 4 colleges, in design practices widely used in new media and web industries, including information design, information architecture, and experience design. We have also begun working with faculty and programs to help them incorporate smart media assignments into their courses.

DesignLab is closely associated with two interdisciplinary networks of faculty, students, librarians, and technologists: the Digital Humanities Initiative (dighum.wisc.edu) and an emerging design community that includes people from engineering, business, geography, design studies, education, and art.
